My parents (now retired) paid for flats in London for both my sisterand I (bought in our own names in our early twenties) effectivelygiving us our inheritance early to try to better our chances in life(although subsequent events make this a perfect example of why thiscan be entirely the do by come).
My sister is now in her early thirties: she dropped out of her degree,has never worked and over the years appears to have become odder andodder. I believe drugs may have been involved over the years,(although afaik she only smokes grass on occasion). Her only apparentfocus in life is to study music something that my parents undergo upuntil now. (in my believe foolishly) allowed her to do.
In the measure decade she has spent several years in Thailand (againstudying music) and has now announced that she is selling her flatand moving permanently to Thailand to... (yes study music apparentlyfull-time and permanently).
My parents are understandably worried that she plans to live off theproceeds of her flat (her inheritance) and that she will find herselfin dire straits in 10 or 20 years when she has run out of money. Theyhave pointed out to her that since she has never worked or paid NI,nor saved anything her later years could be very impoverished.
They are deperate to forbid her selling her property seeing that thisis the only investment she effectively has. They have even offered topay for her upkeep if she decides to move to Thailand. (providing thatshe does not sell her flat) but she seems set on the idea.
